So successfully points out how often trying to be tough and detached isn’t brave or helpful at all

This is arguably the best character as a great male role model. Growing up watching the fresh prince and seeing an uncle share a father-son dynamic between Uncle Phill and Will, gives this movie so much more conviction for some reason. (Knowing Will had father issues.)

*Spoiler*It got to the part where they’re sleeping in the subway bathroom, with someone banging on the door and had to stop
I was so depressed I couldn’t take any more.

Gawd, some of these answers are really drinking the Hollywood-military-gun-culture complex Kool Aid. Male role models that are only applicable if your family has been/is about to be brutally murdered.

Yes. He was an old man, likely born in the 50’s, who was traumatized by the Korean war. It’s no wonder he would have the views he did, but through the kindness of others he was able to find his reason for living again. Perfect role model for the ability to change.
